Mind the Climate Literacy Gap

Climate science is a complex topic, making it challenging for educators to effectively bring it into their lessons. Strengthening the climate literacy of the learners can provide a sound foundation to develop their awareness and ability to start addressing the climate crisis. Climate literacy is an understanding of your influence on the climate and the climate’s influence on you and society. According to the Climate Literacy: Essential Principles of Climate Science guide, a climate-literate person is someone who:

  • understands the essential principles of Earth’s climate system;
  • knows how to assess scientifically credible information about climate;
  • communicates about climate and climate change in a meaningful way, and
  • can make informed and responsible decisions concerning actions that may affect the climate.

The aforementioned guide provides an educational framework of principles and concepts for understanding the climate system in general. The Guide to Teaching Climate Science, on the other hand, shows you how to bring these ideas into your classroom, highlighting useful resources and common misconceptions and how to deal with them. Make sure to check out this useful guide to get started on addressing the climate literacy gap.
